Mooney Airplanes Set Benchmarks For Performance
While Cessna, Beechcraft, and Piper seem to receive a lot of attention in the light airplane market these days, Mooney airplanes are a fantastic choice for those looking for performance, durability, and something just a little bit different. There is no mistaking a Mooney once you glance at the vertical stabilizer with its vertical forward edge and swept trailing edge. Mooney aircraft have set many records such as having the first pressurized, single engine, piston powered airplane on the market. They also produced the first production airplane to do 201 mph on just 200 horsepower. And, they set the record for fastest transcontinental flight in a single engine, piston powered production airplane. The common theme here is that Mooney has been an innovator for over 60 years and has set benchmarks for performance along the way.
The Mooney M20 is by far the most popular and revered model in the Mooney Aircraft stable. Originally launched in 1955 and constructed of wood and cloth, the first Mooney M20 used Lycoming engines rated at either 150 or 180 horsepower. That was significant power for that time. Later versions added more power, fuel injection, and significant improvements such as aluminum body and frame composition and more capable electronics. Mooney obsessed about performance-evidenced by the fact that much of the fleet's top speed performance gains resulted from meticulous riveting practices (flush head rivets and smoothing/contouring panels to reduce wind drag) and an obsessive fascination with aerodynamics (wing tip lights were built into the body of the wing, and then encased in glass to reduce drag). Mooney even went as far as to partner with Porsche motors in 1988 to use their contemporary, 217 horsepower engine, and stretched the chassis to do so.
In addition to speed enhancements and aerodynamic improvements, the Mooney M20 enjoys a substantial useful load rating and significant range. Current models can fly more than 1600 miles at a cruise on a normal load of fuel. Regardless of the specific iteration of Mooney M20, there is a configuration to meet your needs. Looking for a bare bones M20 for training purposes? You'll find that! Prefer a loaded model with the latest in electronics and creature comforts? Those are available as well! Our mission at Trade-A-Plane is to connect buyers and sellers of the Mooney M20 and provide a safe and efficient forum in which to buy or sell this magnificent little airplane.
