Piper Aztec Series Aircraft Information
Originally named {Apache} and later Aztec, the Piper PA-23 is a 1950s US twin-engined monoplane.
Variations of the Aztec include: PA-23-250 Piper Aztec model, PA-23-250 Piper Aztec B, PA-23-250 Piper Aztec C, PA-23-250 Piper Aztec D, PA-23-250 Piper Aztec E, PA-23-250 Piper Aztec F, PA-23T-250 Piper Turbo Aztec, Piper Turbo Aztec C, Piper Turbo Aztec D, Piper Turbo Aztec E, Piper Turbo Aztec F, U-11A, UO-1, and PA-41P Pressurized Aztec. When Piper bought the Stinson Division of the Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation the PA-23 was developed form a proposed "Twin Stinson". The aircraft was the first twin-engine design from Piper.
Powered by two 125 hp Lycoming O-290-D piston engines, the prototype PA-23 was a four-seat, low wing, all-metal monoplane. The Piper Aztec was redesigned with a single vertical stabilizer, an all-metal rear fuselage, and more powerful Lycoming O-230-A engines of 150 hp. In 1958, the engines were upgraded to 160hp and the Apache 160 was born. The next model went to 235 hp engines and swept tail surface. This aircraft was designated the Apache 235.
The Aztec was introduced in 1958 with 250 hp Lycoming O-540 engines and a swept vertical tail. Later models of the aircraft featured IO-540 fuel-injected engines and six seat capacity. Turbocharged versions of the later models were able to fly at higher altitudes.
