Cessna 180 Series Aircraft Information
Produced between 1953 and 1981, the Cessna 180 is a four or six seat, fixed conventional gear general aviation airplane. The capacity of the 180 is one crew member and three to five passengers. The empty weight is 1700 lb (771 kg) and the gross weight is 2800 lb (1270 kg). Cruise speed is 142 knots (163 mph, 263 km/h), stall speed is 48 knots (55 mph, 89 km/h), and the aircraft should not exceed a speed of 148 knots (170 mph, 274 km/h). Though the Cessna 180 is no longer in production, many are still in use as personal aircraft and in utility roles.
The Cessna 180 was introduced as a heavier and more powerful aircraft as a complement to the Cessna 170. The 180 became known as the 180 Skywagon. The first 180 prototype flew on May 26, 1952. Cessna introduced a tricycle landing gear version in 1956 the Cessna 182. Cessna also introduced a heavier, more powerful sibling to the 180 in 1960 the {Cessna 185}. All three versions were in production for a time.
Cessna Aircraft Company built 6193 Cessna 180 models. Various models of the aircraft include the Cessna Model 180, 180A, 180B, 180C, 180D, 180E, 180F, 180G, 180H, 180J, and 180K. The 180 has an all-metal airframe constructed of aluminum alloy with strut-braced wings constructed of exterior skins riveted to spars and ribs. The aircraft's fuselage is a semi-monocoque structure with exterior skin sheets riveted to formers and longerons. The landing gear is in a conventional arrangement with main gear legs made of spring steel and a steerable tailwheel mounted on a hollow tapered steed tube. Models produced between 1953 and 1963 have two side windows and models produced from 1964 to 1981 feature three side windows.
The original Cessna 180 was a four seat aircraft powered by a 225 hp Continental O-470-A, O-470-J, or a 230 hp O-470-K engine. The 180A and 180B are powered by a 230 hp Continental O-470-K engine. The 180C, 180D, 180E, and 180F are powered by the 230 hp Continental O-470-L or O-470-R engine. The 180G and 180H are six seat aircraft powered by a 230 hp Continental O-470-L or O-470-R. The 180J is a six seat aircraft powered by a 230 hp Continental O-470-R or O-470S. The 180K is also a six seat aircraft powered by a 230 hp Continental O-470-U.
Geraldine Mock, the first woman pilot to successfully fly around the world, chose the Cessna 180. Mock had the flight in 1964 in her 1953 model, the Spirit of Columbus. The aircraft is currently on display at the National Air and Space Museum. The 180 is a popular choice with air charter companies, private individuals, and companies.
