Grumman TBM-3 Avenger Aircraft Information
The Grumman TBF Avenger, later sold as TBM by General Motors, is a torpedo bomber initially developed for the US Navy and US Marine Corps. It was later used by several air and naval arms in several countries. The Avenger requires a crew of three for flight. The empty weight is 10,545 lbs (4,783 kg) and the loaded weight for the aircraft is 17,893 lbs (8,115 kg). The maximum speed is 275 mph (442 km/h) and the aircraft is powered by one Wright R-2600-20 radial engine.
The Avenger was, at the time, the heaviest single-engine with the largest maximum loaded weight of any aircraft used during WWII. It was also the first design to have wing-folding mechanisms to maximize storage possibilities. After the war, the Avenger was used for civilian operations such as spray- applicators and water-bombers. Several have been placed in museums or sold to private collectors.
Variations in the TBF series include: XBTF-1, TBF-1, TBF-1C, TBF-1B, TBF-1D, TBF-1CD, TBF-1E, TBF-1E, TBF-1J, TBF-1L, TBF-1P, TBF-1CP. XTBF-2, XTBF-3, and the TBF-3. Variations of the TBM series include: TBM-1, TBM-1C, TBM-1D, TBM-1E, TBM-1J, TBM-1L, TBM-1P, TBM-1CP, XTBM-3, TBM-3, TBM-3D, TBM-3E, TBM-3H, TBM-3J, TBM-3L, TBM-3M, TBM-N, TBM-3P, TBM-3Q, TBM-3R, TBM-3S, TBM-3U, TBM-3W, XTBM-4, and the TBM-4. The Royal Navy Avenger line includes: Avenger Mk.I, Avenger Mk.II, Avenger Mk.III, Avenger Mk.IV, Avenger AS4, Avenger AS3, and the Avenger AS3M.
