Piper Cheyenne Series Aircraft Information
Built by Piper Aircraft, the Piper Cheyenne is a turboprop powered aircraft. The Cheyenne has the capacity for 1-2 crew members and 6-9 passengers. Empty weight is 6837 lb (3101 kg) and maximum takeoff weight is 11,200 lb (5080 kg). Cruise speed is 282 knots (325 mph, 523 km/h), stall speed is 89 knots (103 mph, 165 km/h), and maximum speed is 314 knots (362 mph, 582 km/h). The rate of climb is 2380 ft/min (12.1 m/s). The PA-42 Cheyennes were aimed directly at Beechcraft's King Air twin turboprop series.
Variant Models of the PA-42 include the Piper Cheyenne I, Piper Cheyenne II, Piper Cheyenne II XL, Piper Cheyenne III, Piper Cheyenne IIIA, Cheyenne IV, and Customs High Endurance Tracker (CHET). The PA-42s were larger developments of the earlier PA-31T Cheyenne I and II. In 1969, the first Cheyenne prototype flew. The aircraft was essentially a turboprop evolution of the Piper Navajo. The PA-31T-620 was powered by two 620 hp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-28 turboprops.
In 1979, the PA-42-720 Cheyenne III was released. The Cheyenne III was powered by PT6A-41 turboshafts and introduced a T-tail. The T-tail was a significant change to the series. The standard model features a full complement of deicing equipment, Q-tip propellers, more powerful 250 ampere/hour starter-generators, and a 6.3 psi pressurization system backed up by an emergency system operated by the right engine's bleed air. Upgrades available for other models became standard equipment for the III. These include the SAS, redesigned exhaust stubs, and a redesigned engine intake air scoop.
After 1988, the IIIA superseded the Cheyenne III .The IIIA has PT64-61 engines and 300 ampere starter-generators. The newer model also featured improved air conditioning, speed stacks, increased passenger head-room, and more reliable fuel control units. The PA-42-1000 is higher powered and much faster than the PA-42-720. The Cheyenne IV is equipped with a powered 1000 shp Garrett TPE331 turboprops driving four-blade, 106 inch diameter, composite construction Dowty Rotol propellers. The aircraft was in production from 1984 to 1993. The Piper Cheyenne models are operated by private individuals, companies, and executive charter operators.
